There’s a lot to it, yes. In the 2nd-3rd centuries, Christians were rampantly accused of baby-eating and incestuous orgies (true story).

They backed into an extreme public morality, to not seem like deviant freaks. Then by the late 3rd century the Catholic stuff took over.
