In the Bible, humans are spiritually controlled. We’re born with a spirit that is enslaved (John 8:34; cf. Gal 4:7; Rom 6:18, etc.).

We only think we act on our own (Rom 7:18). Spirits are in charge, and our perceptions are shaped by their intentions.

The Holy Spirit endows ‘self-control’ . . . control of oneself . . . and from the HS, we can begin attuning to the mind & intentions of God.

It’s never about codes of behavior, human laws, self-effort to adjust behavior, etc. All that is beside the point. Spirits are in charge, and Jesus is the spirit whose operating intention is love.
